Mapping

Different types of maps have various uses on-line. This page describes some of the options and gives links to a range of sites which demonstrate these techniques.

Web based mapping is making quantum leaps, and numerous web sites now provide increasingly sophisticated mapping options. At the very simplest you could post up a pdf file of a map image like this PDF of the Cairngorms National Park (300 KB).

Alternatively you could have an image which is not interactive but illustrates important information to support text.

However the ability to log onto services such as Multimap and Streetmap has increased expectations in terms of what people expect.

People begin to expect interactive maps like these and others. Here are some examples for you to explore:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) collect data in SNH, local authorities and other organisations. You can make use of this to develop interactive maps online. An example of this can be found at: http://www.southernuplandway.com/walk/default.asp

More details on mapping issues can be explored in our Mapping (150 KB) guidelines PDF.
